People often ask me what my process is when it comes to projects. Here is an example of my process with a mascot design for the Midwestern University College of Pharmacy.
Step 1 Prep: I talk with my clients (either by email, phone, or skype) and collect their ideas for the project. The more details given for the project the easier it is for me to get a stellar sketch the first time around. I also recommend clients give me any reference pictures of the style and/or subject of the project to help me get an idea of what they are looking for in a design.
Step 2 Sketch: Based on client’s details and references I start sketching. For a mascot or logo I usually sketch 3 choices and then make mock ups of the design to give my client an idea of placement and font style that would compliment the spirit of the design. (See 3 examples above.) It is also important to note this step is the time for the client to express any major or small changes. It is so much easier to make changes to a sketch then it is to go back and change an inked, colored, and finalized design.
Step 3 Finalize: After changes and tweaks are made to my clients liking, I start inking, coloring, finalizing, and saving out the final design in the format that best suits my clients needs (Ex: pdf, ai, cdr, jpg, eps, png, psd, tif, etc.) Check out the final image above. You can compare it to the sketch designs shown earlier and see the little tweaks and changes.
All in all, a strong mascot design can really help bring a sense of professionalism to the school and strengthen student pride & school spirit. And of course, it can also help sell merchandise, which in turn, further benefits the school.
