I recently got the opportunity to sketch a fantasy creature called a Beholder, for a client. This monster floats in the air and has a whole bunch of eyes… a creature right up my alley! My client was wanting to start a product line of archery targets featuring fantasy creatures. I started this project by sketching the 3 style concepts you see above.
After my client reviewed the 3 concept sketches, they agreed that #1 was their favorite, but with an adjustment. They asked for spikes to be added to this one, like #3 had. Once I added the spikes on the body, the creature was instantly approved. Now it was time to move into the final color image.
For this project, since the artwork would be printed in a very large size, I recommended that they have me create the final artwork as a vector file. Vector artwork can be scaled infinitely, without the loss of quality. My client loved the final look for the color character! I chose to use strong linework and bold colors, so that it would be easy to see and aim at, when made into an archery target.
If I can help your product ideas become a reality, please feel free to contact me through my website anytime. I am always happy to talk with people about their creative ideas for toys, prints, books, and other products. I truly believe that quality artwork can really help a good product idea become a great one.
